Dana Schechter (Insect Ark) on Bee and Flower, current endeavours, creative roots, advertising and the Roadburn festival
During the latest edition of the Roadburn festival in Tilburg we had the honour to meet Dana Schechter of Insect Ark, among great shows and beautiful, easy moments. Schechter was kind enough to tell us a few words about her work, which is really vast and besides her main projects involves past collaborations with Michael Gira’s Angels of Light, Gnaw, Zeal & Ardor and many others. We talked about her former wonderful band Bee and Flower and the reasons why Dana Schechter stopped using the vocals in her musical creation and then we focused on the current project Insect Ark and her collaboration with drummer Ashley Spungin, the performance at Roadburn and memories from other realms, where she toured with Wrekmeister Harmonies. Besides music, Schechter deals with the visual art as well, so we can learn in the video below about her perspective on the advertising world and its futility. You can watch her animation work in various music videos created for her projects or other artists such as Lydia Lunch, or you can go and check various documentary and feature films which involve her contribution, like “Vice Special Report: A World in Disarray” (2017), “I Am Evidence” (2017), or “Watchers of the Sky” (2013) which got the Sundance U.S. documentary special jury award for animation. Here’s the synopsis of our conversation.
